Sound Cottage is a native soundboard for iPhone and Mac. Tap a button and it just plays — a doorbell for game night, a thunderstorm for bedtime, brown noise for deep work. Questions, answered
Is Sound Cottage free?
The app is free to download and genuinely useful for free: dozens of built-in sounds, looping background playback, sleep-timer and break-reminder presets, one custom sound, sharing, and Party Mode. There are no ads and no accounts. Sound Cottage Pro is an optional upgrade — see the Free & Pro section.
How does the free trial work?
The yearly Pro plan starts with a 14-day free trial. Try everything; if it's not for you, cancel at least a day before the trial ends in your device's subscription settings and you won't be charged. Subscriptions are handled entirely by Apple.
Does it run on Mac?
Yes — Sound Cottage is one native app for iPhone and Mac, and one purchase unlocks both. The Mac version has keyboard shortcuts (space to play/pause, ⌘F to search), menu-bar commands, and a resizable grid.
Does audio keep playing when I lock my phone?
Yes. Loopable sounds — the Sleep and Focus beds — keep playing in the background with full lock-screen and Control Center controls. If a phone call comes in, the sound pauses and resumes by itself when the call ends. A sleep timer can fade it out whenever you choose.
Can I add my own sounds?
Yes — record with the microphone or import audio files. The free tier includes one custom sound; Pro makes it unlimited and can also extract the audio track from video files. Every custom sound gets a color and icon automatically, which Pro users can customize.
What is Party Mode?
Pick a sound and it takes over the whole screen as one giant buzzer — tap anywhere and it plays instantly, as fast as you can tap. Perfect for quiz nights and board games. Party Mode itself is free with the built-in sounds; using your own recordings in it is a Pro feature.
What are break reminders?
An optional, off-by-default nudge to take a break while a Focus sound is playing — a gentle banner and chime in the foreground, or a time-sensitive notification if the app is in the background. Your audio never stops for a reminder, and everything is scheduled locally on your device.
How does iCloud sync work?
With Pro, you can optionally sync your own recordings and imports across your devices through your personal iCloud. It uses your private iCloud storage — nothing is ever uploaded to the developer, because there are no developer servers at all. The app works fully without it.
Is my data private?
Completely. Sound Cottage collects no data — no analytics, no ads, no tracking, no accounts. The microphone is used only when you tap record, and recordings stay on your device unless you share them or turn on iCloud sync. Read the full privacy policy.
